Hi! I'd like to start by saying welcome to the SWSS minisite! SWSS is short for Socialist Workers Students Society which is a bit of a mouthful so let's use SWSS as much as possible in the future! One way of looking at the society is that it's a place where students can come hear an authentic Socialist take on current events and regardless of whether they agree or disagree can entertain these ideas and engage in debate on them. Just let our speakers have a say first please!
It's also a place where those interested in joining the society can do so and meet other members and discuss plans for the future in terms of campaigns, events, and so on. We meet every Tues. at 1pm in E-block Harrow in Rm E6.3 which is on the third floor accessed by the lift next to the Refectory.
People often have this dreary image of Socialism as represented by oppressive regimes like Stalinist Russia, East Germany and so on but we're here to say that that's the last thing we want to foist upon humanity! Rather, look to Orwell's description of socialist dynamics in the context of the Spanish Civil War in his 'Homage to Catalonia' and try and understand that we're interested in greater democracy not less! What's wrong with our present situation in the so-called 'free west' is that capitalism is running the show and we as citizens have little impact. This can change if we get organized and band together as opposed to being powerless in isolation. Join SWSS! Better yet Join the SWP (Socialist Workers Party)! Come to the meetings and ask questions, agree, disagree, debate, get encouraged - get involved!
