Academic advice

We provide independent and confidential advice on University regulations and procedures such as mitigating circumstances, complaints, appeals, breaches of assessment regulations and disciplinary procedures.

Our academic advisors will guide you through the processes involved in the above.

Breaches of assessment regulations
A breach of assessment regulations is basically breaking the rules of assessment – this refers to coursework and exams. Examples include copying in exams or including other people’s work in your coursework.

We have advice and information on the following common assessment problems:

- Plagiarism (passing someone else’s work off as your own)
- Collusion (working with someone else to produce your work when it should be an individual project)
- Cheating in exams and class tests

Find out more about assessment offences here.

Mitigating Circumstances
Mitigating Circumstances (MCs) are serious, unforeseen, unpreventable circumstances that significantly affect your academic performance in any exams or coursework for example: serious illness or bereavement.

If, due to serious circumstances beyond your control, you are unable to submit your coursework, submit your coursework late (within 10 working days of the submission deadline) or are unable to attend an exam, you will need to submit a claim for Mitigating Circumstances (MCs).

Find out more about Mitigating Circumstances here.

Complaints
If you have a complaint about your experience at University - whether academic standards or service delivery falls short of what you expect, you should follow the student complaints procedure.

Find out more about the student complaints procedure here.
