Academic Advice

Academic Advice

Advice and help

The Students’ Union isn’t just about the fun side of university. We’re also here to help you out when things get tough, if you have academic problems, or simply need to chat to someone in confidence.

Education & Welfare Department

Helping hand

The Education & Welfare Department at the Students’ Union provides independent and confidential advice on University regulations and procedures such as mitigating circumstances, complaints, appeals, breach of assessment regulations and disciplinary procedures. If you feel your course leader or personal tutor aren’t giving you the support you need, or haven’t been able to complete work on time due to circumstances out of your control, we can advise you on the best course of action. We are also here for you as a first point of contact, so whatever the problem, if you’re not sure where to go or who to ask, try us. If we are unable to assist you we will refer you to the relevant department.

We don’t just offer advice on complaints and procedures. If you’ve got personal problems or money problems, and you can’t find anyone to talk to, pop in and have a chat. We’ll help you in any way we can, and, again, if we can’t we’ll refer you to someone who can.

Mitigating Circumstances

Mitigating Circumstances (previously called Extenuating Circumstances) are unforeseen, unpreventable circumstances that significantly affect your academic performance in any exams or coursework.

When Things Go Wrong

Unfortunately not everything is straightforward at University. Sometimes things can go wrong and you’ll need some advice and support. Things happen and you might not be able to hand in work or you could be really unhappy with the service you are receiving at University. You may even breach the University regulations and need guidance on this. Look through this section for information on all of these issues and what to do next.
