Here at UWSU, we know that a lot of you love to stay fit, but can’t always budget for gym membership. And even if you go for a run, all that time with just you and your iPod can get a little lonely (and boring)!
This is where the folks at GoodGym come in- GoodGym is a community of runners who combine well-being and fitness with volunteering. GoodGym supports a number of small charities and non-profits across London through weekly group runs and volunteering activities. Formed in 2009 as a not-for-profit company, GoodGym has been growing and developing ever since, with groups in several London boroughs including Hackney, Camden, Lambeth, Tower Hamlets and, most recently, Westminster.
GoodGym are taking sign-ups for their new Westminster group. As part of the group, you’ll be invited to attend their weekly runs, and if you’re interested, be paired with a ‘coach’ (see the ‘Going that extra mile’ section).
Here are just a few of the benefits of becoming a member:
- Get fit without having to pay a penny
- Make a contribution to the local community
- Meet new people outside of the University
- Showing an interest in fitness + helping the community = amazing on your CV!

WHO IS IT FOR?
GoodGym is for anyone who wants to run, get fit, meet new people and explore London. Don’t worry if you have never run before, this is a great place to start!
WHEN AND WHERE?
Group runs happen every Wednesday 6.15pm, starting from Impact Hub Westminster, near Piccadilly Circus. There is space to leave your stuff and shower facilities in the building.
GOING THAT EXTRA MILE
GoodGym also work to ease loneliness and isolation amongst older people: 13% of people over 65 in the UK say that they always or often feel lonely, and 17% of those living alone see family and friends less than once a week.
“With ageing you lose a lot of friends. It’s really sad, and it does affect your quality of life. Loneliness is difficult to cope with.” – Joan Boulter, 87
GoodGym makes a contribution to improving quality of life for older people.
If you are interested, GoodGym will pair you with a coach. A coach is an isolated older person in the community who is often less mobile. Runners jog to their coach’s house once a week to deliver something nice and have a quick chat. It helps runners to get fit by providing a good reason to go for a run and it helps the coach by giving them regular, friendly contact. You can read stories about our runners and coaches here.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
You can sign up on the website. Just go to Get Started and GoodGym will keep you up to date about group runs in your area. There is no cost and you don’t have to become a member to try it out.
Hopefully after a run of two you will be up for becoming a member and your group co-ordinator will help you to achieve your personal fitness goals.
Do good, explore the greatest city on earth, get fit and meet new people. GoodGym is now happening in Westminster. Get involved. #fitforpurpose.
